1. Gadolinium has the highest thermal neutron capture cross section and can be used as a reactor control material and a structural material to prevent nuclear radiation.
2. Gadolinium can also be used as an additive for new magnetic materials yttrium iron garnet and yttrium aluminum garnet. The ultra-low temperature close to absolute zero (0.002K) can be obtained by magnetizing and cooling gadolinium salts.
